Oh the environment!

This is my post for today. It is actually my stupid fact sheet.

Although Singaporeans are fully aware about the plight that the environment is in, it seems that the responsibility of preventing Singapore from sinking in waste is not theirs.

Let's look at the "plastic bag campaign". Much ado about something that is only implemented to help us. The reason why each plastic bag is priced at the exhorbitant 10 cents, is so that Singaporeans will learn to conserve.

Even after eratic weather conditions in 2005, Singaporeans are still not concerned about the plight the environment is in.

Does it take fear and strict laws to propel one into action? And even when laws are imposed, there is still much complain and resentment. What some fail to realise is that if initiative was used at the start, there would be no need for such hassle.

Of course not everyone is as I described. Some are already so excited about the campaign and have bought reusable bags to carry all the time, and some welcome the initiative and are whole-heartedly participating in environmental efforts now that they have support.

What about the larger population? Do we sit back and wait for someone larger, more powerful or wealthier to do something?

Some drive their blue limousines to the nearest non-airconditioned cafeterias and congregate to discuss in hush tones about how they as well as their spouses should avoid marketing on wednesdays.

or, while having their cheapo manicures, high-maintenance ladies with nothing better to do but watch Ah Chen on the telly will strategise on how they should take plastic bags from mama shops or wet markets, THEN shop in NTUC/SHOP & SAVE/COLD STORAGE.
